Welcome to the Australian Learning Disability Association (ALDA) email list.
This is a "closed" list - that is, subscription to this list needs to be approved by the list owner (Timothy Hart). Plus you will need to be a current member of ALDA to join this email list.
If you are not currently a member of ALDA but wish to become one, please go to http://www.adcet.edu.au/Alda/Membership.chpx, and download the membership form and follow the directions.
There is much to discuss in Australia in the area of learning disability. Please feel free to ask ANY questions (learning starts at the beginning) and debate any LD topics via this list.
Learning Disability is clearly covered under the DDA definition which states:
'A disorder or malfunction which results in the person learning differently from a person without the disorder or malfunction....'
The definition of 'disability' in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)was intended to be as broad as possible, to ensure that no person who is discriminated against because of disability is left without a remedy due to definitional problems. Unfortunately this has left a significant number of Australians, those with learning disability, without focussed relevant representation and information.
The ALDA website http://www.adcet.edu.au/Alda/ALDA_State_and_Territory_Representatives.chpx contains links from around the world and information and resources related to LD within Australia that has been, and is being developed. The site also contains the contact details for states and territories of organisations and individuals that can provide information, resources and services related to LD.
Good Luck using the mailing list and please contact me if you have any queries by mailing: thart@med.usyd.edu.au
